Understanding Landfill Tipping Fees
Landfills charge a "tipping fee" based on weight. When your truck arrives at the dump, it pulls onto a scale to get a Gross Weight. After emptying the dumpster, it pulls back onto the scale for a Tare Weight. You are billed for the difference in Tons (2,000 lbs).
- The Danger: A dumpster filled with household junk might only weigh 1 ton ($60 dump fee). That exact same dumpster filled with roofing shingles or concrete could weigh 4 tons ($240 dump fee). If your flat rate was $400, your margin just vanished.
