How to Quote Junk Removal Like a Pro

For junk removal business owners, pricing a job is the hardest part of the hustle. If you charge strictly by truck volume (cubic yards) without factoring in the weight density of the debris, you will lose money at the transfer station. Landfills charge "tipping fees" by the ton. A truck full of mattresses costs significantly less to dump than a truck full of drywall, even if they take up the same space.

Our Junk Removal Pricing Calculator Per Cubic Yard bridges the gap between spatial volume and weight, giving you an accurate estimate of your dump fees before you hand the customer a quote.

Understanding Weight Density

  • Light Debris (~150 lbs/cy): Cardboard, empty boxes, plastic toys, yard clippings. Very high volume, very low weight. High profit margin.
  • Medium Debris (~250 lbs/cy): Standard household junk, couches, dressers, mixed garage cleanouts. This is your bread and butter.
  • Heavy Debris (~450+ lbs/cy): Construction waste, drywall, plaster, wet wood. These eat into your margins fast. You must quote higher.
  • Extreme Debris (1,000+ lbs/cy): Dirt, concrete, brick, roofing shingles. Most standard trucks will max out their payload capacity long before filling up spatial volume.

How the Math Works

To find your estimated dump fee, the calculator multiplies your estimated cubic yards by the average weight density of the selected debris type to find total pounds. It then divides by 2,000 to convert to tons. Finally, it multiplies your estimated tons by your local landfill's tipping fee.

Gross Margin vs. Net Profit: Keep in mind that this calculator provides your Gross Margin (Customer Quote minus Dump Fees). To find your true net profit, you must also subtract your labor costs, fuel, vehicle wear-and-tear, and marketing expenses.
