The Science Behind Lowering Pool pH

For professional pool route technicians, maintaining a proper pH balance is the foundation of water chemistry. When a pool's pH drifts too high (above 7.8), chlorine loses up to 80% of its sanitizing power, water becomes cloudy, and scale begins to form on pool equipment and surfaces.

Muriatic acid (hydrochloric acid) is the industry standard for rapidly dropping pH levels. However, over-treating a pool with too much acid can crash the pH and total alkalinity, leading to corrosive water that destroys heat exchangers and irritates swimmers' skin. Our Muriatic Acid Pool Calculator ensures you dose the exact amount needed.

How the Acid Dosage Math Works

The baseline formula used by commercial pool operators states that it takes approximately 12 fluid ounces of 20 Baumé (31.45%) muriatic acid to drop the pH of 10,000 gallons of water by exactly 0.2 points.

  • Example 1: If you have a 10,000-gallon pool and the pH is 8.0, and you want to drop it to 7.4 (a difference of 0.6). Because 0.6 is exactly three times our baseline of 0.2, you would need 36 ounces of acid (12 oz × 3).
  • Example 2: If you have a 20,000-gallon pool and need that same 0.6 drop, you simply double the dosage to account for the volume: 72 fluid ounces.

Important Variables: Alkalinity & Acid Strength

It is critical to note that total alkalinity (TA) acts as a buffer for pH. If a pool's TA is extremely high, you may need slightly more acid to achieve the desired pH drop. Conversely, if TA is very low, the pH will crash rapidly with very little acid.

Additionally, be aware of what you are buying at the hardware store. Professional pool stores sell 20 Baumé (31.45%) acid, while big-box retailers often sell "half-strength" or "safe" muriatic acid at 10 Baumé (15.72%). If you use half-strength acid, you must double the dosage calculated for standard acid.
