The Math Behind Termite Trenching

For pest control professionals, accurately bidding and executing a termite trenching job comes down to precise chemistry. If you miscalculate the linear footage or the trench depth, you will either under-apply the termiticide (leading to callbacks and property damage) or over-apply it, which eats directly into your profit margins.

The 4-Gallon Industry Standard

When using professional-grade termiticides (like Termidor SC or Taurus SC), the EPA-regulated label dictates exactly how much active ingredient must be placed in the soil. The universal industry standard for perimeter foundation trenching is:

4 Gallons of Mixed Solution per 10 Linear Feet, per Foot of Depth
  • Example 1 (Shallow Footer): If a home has a 200-foot perimeter and the footer is 1 foot deep, the math is simple. Divide 200 by 10 (which is 20). Multiply 20 by 4 gallons. You need 80 gallons of mixed solution.
  • Example 2 (Deep Footer): If that exact same home sits on a hill and the footer is 3 feet deep, you must multiply that requirement by 3. You would need 240 gallons of mixed solution.

Calculating Concentrate (Fluid Ounces)

Once you know your total mixed gallons required, you must determine how much raw chemical concentrate to pour into your rig tank. For a standard 0.06% active ingredient solution, the mix rate is typically 0.8 fluid ounces per gallon of water.

Using our 80-gallon example: 80 gallons × 0.8 fl oz = 64 fluid ounces of concentrate. Since most commercial termiticides are sold in 78-ounce bottles, you will use roughly 80% of a single bottle for a standard 200-foot home.
